Clean skin starts with clean ingredients. At Goodlather, we take soap back to basics — the way it was meant to be made. Our bars are handcrafted using the cold process method, a traditional technique that takes time, patience, and a whole lot of care. Here’s why we believe slow and steady makes for better soap (and happier skin).
What Is Cold Process Soap?
Cold process soap is made by combining natural oils or fats with lye (a type of alkali) in a reaction called saponification.
What makes it different? We don’t add heat. Instead, we let the reaction’s natural warmth do the work. Once poured into molds, the soap cures slowly over several weeks, allowing it to harden, mellow, and develop the rich, creamy texture you know and love.
This careful, slow process preserves the nourishing qualities of the oils, resulting in a gentle, moisturizing soap that leaves skin soft, smooth, and comfortable — perfect for sensitive skin and everyday use.

How It Differs: Hot Process Soap
Hot process soap takes the same ingredients but turns up the heat — literally. The mixture is cooked to speed up the saponification process, meaning it’s ready to use in just a few days instead of weeks.
While that makes it faster, it can also break down delicate oils and reduce their natural skincare benefits. Cold process soap takes the slower route, but in return, it preserves the integrity of every oil and botanical.
It’s the difference between slow-brewed coffee and instant — both get you clean, but one just feels a little more special.
What About Melt-and-Pour?
Melt-and-pour soap starts with a pre-made base that’s melted down, mixed with color or scent, and poured into molds. It’s simple and fun — great for crafters or beginners — but not quite the same as making soap from scratch.
Because the base is already processed (and often includes synthetic additives or detergents), it lacks the rich, natural feel and moisturizing properties that cold process soap delivers.
Think of it as the shortcut version of soapmaking — convenient, but not crafted with the same depth or care.
Why We Choose Cold Process
At Goodlather, we believe good things take time. Each bar is carefully mixed, poured, and left to cure for weeks — no shortcuts, no added heat, no unnecessary extras. Just pure, natural ingredients doing what they do best.
The result is a soap that’s gentle, hydrating, and long-lasting — made to clean without stripping your skin’s natural balance.
Because when it comes to good, clean fun… we like to keep it slow, intentional, and honest.
