Orris Absolute Oil

Regarded by some as the "queen of florals," orris root is a fragrant botanical that has captivated perfumers, herbalists, and naturalists for centuries. This timeless ingredient boasts a rich and powdery scent that evokes both elegance and mystery, making it a perfect addition to the natural fragrance library behind the handcrafted soap bars from Beaverton’s.

The ingredient known as “orris root” is the dried rhizome of plants in the Iris genus, primarily Iris germanica and Iris pallida. Known for its unique fragrance, the root is harvested and dried after the plant's flowers have bloomed, and it is then aged to develop its aromatic properties. The process of harvesting and preparing orris root is labour intensive, making it a rare and highly valued ingredient in both the fragrance and herbal industries. The scent of orris root is often described as a mix of floral and earthy undertones, and it is a key ingredient in many high end perfumes. Beyond its use in fragrance, orris root has a long history of use in traditional medicine due to the belief that it can treat inflammation. Orris root is also occasionally used in culinary applications, although in such cases it is typically used for its aroma rather than its flavor.

The history of orris root dates back thousands of years. It was prized by the ancient Egyptians, who used orris root in perfumes and incense, believing it had sacred and medicinal properties. In Greek and Roman times, the root was highly regarded for its use in cosmetics as well as for its supposed health benefits. During the Middle Ages, orris root became a symbol of wealth and luxury in Europe where it was incorporated into potpourris, perfumes, and medicinal remedies. The Venetian Republic, became known for cultivating and trading high quality orris root, with its market presence stretching across Europe and into the Middle East. Over time its use in perfumery grew, with orris root becoming a key ingredient in many classic fragrances.

Orris root has been a cornerstone of perfumery for centuries, valued for its complex and powdery fragrance that adds depth and elegance to a wide range of scents. Its distinctive aroma is highly sought after for its ability to enhance other floral, woody, and oriental notes. Due to its rarity and the labour required to prepare the rhizomes, orris is considered a luxurious and expensive ingredient in high end perfumes. Orris is often used as a fixative, helping to stabilize and extend the longevity of other more volatile fragrance notes. Beyond perfumes, orris root is also found in other scented products such as soaps, lotions, and candles, where it imparts a refined floral scent.

Oils extracted from orris root contain a complex array of chemical constituents that contribute to its distinctive aroma. The primary component of orris oil is a compound called ionone, which imparts its characteristic scent reminiscent of the violet flower. Ionone exists in two forms, alpha-ionone and beta-ionone, both of which play a role in the floral, sweet, and slightly woody notes of orris. Orris root oil also contains sesquiterpenes such as beta-caryophyllene and alpha-humulene, which contribute to its earthy and spicy undertones. Other compounds like spicy eugenol, and trace amounts of fatty acids further enhance the oil's complexity and stability. The unique blend of these constituents gives orris oil its long lasting refined scent, and contributes to its use in perfumery as a fixative, helping to prolong the life of a fragrance.

Naturally derived soaps which feature orris root offer a unique experience, combining the delicate powdery fragrance of this revered botanical with the soothing properties of a high quality cleanser. Allow the orris root scented cold process soaps from Beaverton’s to add an air of sophistication to any bathing ritual and stand as a testament to nature’s enduring elegance.
