Lemon Peel: The Sparkle

Citrus limon. The fruit that saved the British Navy.

Where it comes from

Lemons started in northeast India and reached the Mediterranean through Arab traders around 1000 AD. For centuries they were a luxury: Mughal emperors grew them, Renaissance gardens showed them off, and the Royal Navy famously issued lemon juice to sailors to fight scurvy, which is where the nickname "limey" comes from. The oil isn't distilled at all. It's cold-pressed from the peel, which is why it smells exactly like a freshly zested lemon. It takes about 3,000 lemons to make a kilo of oil. Italy, Argentina and Spain are the main producers.

What it does for skin

Lemon peel oil is naturally cleansing and refreshing, and it's long been used to brighten dull or oily skin. In soap it cuts through the day with a clean, crisp finish and adds a natural freshness to the lather.

How it smells

Zesty, sharp and instantly recognizable. It's the sparkle on top of our Lemongrass & Ginger bar, the part that makes the whole shower smell like a citrus grove.

Good to know

Cold-pressed lemon oil can make skin more sensitive to sun if it's left on. Because soap rinses off completely, that's not a concern here, but it's why we'd never put it in a leave-on product without care. Ours is certified organic.
